Hair With Extensions: Blowout 48-Hour Do’s & Don’ts
By Cut & Blow Hair Salon - Blow Bar | July 24, 2026
Downtown Brooklyn (near Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO) | 60 minutes | $100

When you leave our Downtown Brooklyn blow bar, we want you feeling the way one of our visitors put it: clean, relaxed, and really happy with your blowout. The single most important rule for the first 48 hours with hair with extensions is simple: don’t wash it, and don’t do anything that soaks the roots or stresses the attachment points.
That means skipping heavy sweating, tight updos, and rough brushing. Give the style time to set, keep bonds calm, and you’ll usually get 4 to 7 days out of your blowout hair, even with Brooklyn humidity and subway commutes in the mix.
First 48 hours: the rules that keep extensions smooth (and attached)
Your blowout with already installed extensions is all about volume and movement without pulling on your install. The first two days are when most frizz, tangling, and slipping starts if you treat it like “regular hair.” We don’t want that for you.
48-hour non-negotiables: No washing, no sauna or hot yoga, no tight ponytails or slick buns, and no oil at the attachment points.
Do this instead
- Brush gently, starting at the ends. Hold the hair above the attachment area with your free hand, then detangle upward. A loop brush or soft paddle extension brush is your best friend here.
- Keep sweat light and controlled. If you get caught in a hot subway car or a summer walk in Brooklyn, blot at the roots with a clean towel, then let the hair air-dry fully before brushing.
- Sleep like you mean it. Silk pillowcase helps. If you’re a restless sleeper, tie a loose low pony or a loose braid. The goal is fewer knots at the nape.
- Keep hands off the attachment points. No picking, scratching, or “checking” the bonds. That’s how tangles start.
If you’re headed to an event at Barclays Center or a breezy walk by Brooklyn Bridge Park, bring a small soft brush and a couple of snag-free elastics. A quick, gentle reset beats a full redo.
Days 3 to 7: how to keep that “silky smooth” finish
Once you’re past the first 48 hours, your job is keeping the hair moving in the direction we styled it, without coating the bonds in heavy product. People tell us they leave feeling “silky smooth”, and you can keep that feel going with a few simple habits.
The biggest mistakes we see
- Over-brushing at the top. Brush more at the mids and ends, less at the root area. Tugging near attachments can cause shedding and frizz.
- Oil where it shouldn’t go. Oils and thick serums can make attachment points slippery, and they also grab lint fast. Use a lightweight serum only on the mid-lengths and ends.
- Heat without protection. If you touch up with a blow dryer or hot tool, use a lightweight heat protectant and keep it moving. Don’t park heat right on the bonds.
- Going to bed with damp hair. This is a tangling magnet, especially at the nape.
Swimming is the other big one. We generally recommend waiting 48 to 72 hours before swimming, and if you do swim after that, keep hair secured in a loose braid and rinse as soon as you can. Salt and chlorine make extensions grabby.
Extension-safe products for blowout hair (and where to put them)
You don’t need a shelf of products. You need the right categories, used in the right spots, so you protect the style and the install.
Sulfate-free, extension-safe shampoo and conditioner
Focus shampoo on your scalp and let it run through. Conditioner belongs on mids and ends. Keep both lighter near attachment points.
Lightweight heat protectant
A quick mist before a dryer pass or hot tool helps your blowout stay bouncy instead of drying out by day four.
Humidity help for Brooklyn summers
Look for a lightweight anti-frizz serum or spray. Use it sparingly on the surface and ends. Skip the roots and attachment areas.

Fast refresh steps when your blowout meets subway heat
If your roots puff up after a warm platform wait or you get that bend at the crown from a hat, you can usually bring it back in 6 to 10 minutes at home.
- Let the hair cool and dry first. Brushing damp hair with extensions is how tangles sneak in.
- Brush ends to roots gently. Hold the hair above the attachment points while you detangle.
- Use a blow dryer on low to medium. Aim at the direction of the style. Keep airflow moving. Add a round brush only if you’re comfortable.
- Spot-smooth the surface. A tiny amount of lightweight anti-frizz product on the ends is plenty.
Downtown Brooklyn tip: If you’re coming from Manhattan, Williamsburg, Jersey City, or Long Island City and you need a quick reset, our location makes it easy to pop in around your day without committing to a full redo.
If something feels “off, ” tell us early (it’s usually a quick fix)
A blowout with extensions should feel polished, comfortable, and easy to manage. If you notice unusual tangling at the nape, persistent snagging near an attachment point, or a section that keeps flipping the wrong way, let us know. We’d rather help you adjust it before it becomes a bigger detangle.
People come back to us because we pay attention to the details and keep the vibe easy. One regular summed it up perfectly: professional, knowledgeable, and a go-to spot for styling that looks fresh when you walk back out into Brooklyn humidity.
